Introduction

Cardiology is the branch of
internal medicine dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The field is commonly divided in the branches of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology.

Cardiovascular disease (and in particular coronary artery disease) is the most common disease in the developed world. It is the UK's biggest killer, with one in every four men, and one in every six women dying from the disease. In the UK, approximately 300,000 people have a heart attack each year and there are an estimated 1.2 million people with angina.

Significant developments have been made in the last decade to improve investigation, treatment and the long term outlook in patients with heart disease. Cardiac disease can be detected at a much earlier stage than previously. Disease progression can be prevented at an earlier stage meaning treatments are therefore simpler and more effective.
This website has been designed to act as a resource for useful information about cardiac disease with straightforward explanations of common cardiac conditions, their investigation and treatment.
